Retreat to Berrylicious Urban Oasis
If you enjoy growing your own fruits and want more berry plants without spending extra money, try propagating them from cuttings. It’s an easy and rewarding way to fill your garden—or even your terrace garden—with tasty plants. All you need are a few simple tools and a bit of patience. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you do it.
Step 1: Choose a Healthy Plant
Pick a strong and healthy berry plant that’s already giving you good fruit. Look for a stem that’s not too old or too new—something from the current season but firm enough that it isn’t floppy.
Step 2: Take the Cutting
Use clean, sharp scissors or garden shears to snip a piece that’s around 6 to 8 inches long. Cut just below a leaf node (that’s the small bump where the leaf joins the stem). Remove any flowers or berries from the cutting.
Step 3: Strip the Lower Leaves
Gently remove the leaves from the bottom half of the cutting. This helps the plant focus on growing roots instead of supporting the leaves.
Step 4: Prepare the Pot and Soil
Fill a small pot with moist potting soil or a mix of soil and sand. Make a hole in the soil with your finger or a stick, about 2–3 inches deep.
Step 5: Plant the Cutting
Dip the cut end in some rooting hormone if you have it (this step is optional but can help). Then place the cutting in the hole and press the soil gently around it to hold it in place.
Step 6: Water and Cover
Water the soil lightly so it’s damp, not soggy. Cover the pot with a clear plastic bag or bottle with the top cut off to keep moisture in. Make sure the plastic doesn’t touch the cutting.
Step 7: Place in Indirect Light
Put the pot in a spot with indirect sunlight. A windowsill that doesn't get direct afternoon sun is perfect. High heat or bright sun can stress the cutting.
Step 8: Wait and Watch
In 3–4 weeks, you’ll notice new leaves starting to grow. That means your cutting has grown roots! At this point, remove the plastic cover and let it adjust to normal air.
Once the cutting is strong enough, move it to a bigger pot or into your garden. Enjoy fresh berries from your very own propagated plant!
